Welcome!

I am Tom Palmer, Senior Pastor at First United Methodist Church in Mesquite, Texas. I recently was appointed to First Church after serving as a part-time Associate Pastor for over a decade. My appointment to full-time ministry followed my retirement from a 30-year career as an economic developer for several cities in the Dallas area, most recently right down the street from the church, the City of Mesquite.

You may think it a bit unusual, from economic development to church work, but it really is not! My motto in the secular world was, “I make the dirt fly,” and now my motto in the church world is, “I help souls soar!”

God is good, and at First Church, we want to be with you, as together, we experience God’s grace, forgiveness, and peace. Our mission is to love God, Love our neighbor, and serve the community.

Let me know how we can connect and fulfill the mission together, brothers and sisters in faith!

My Favorite Things

Helping people get to know the God I know, the God I see everyday when I look in the face of another, for we are all created in God’s image!

I like baseball, reading, Broadway musicals, singing, and, most of all, traveling and hanging out with my wife, Valerie, (she’s the tall blonde you’ll meet when you visit!).

Being a granddad is another one of my favorite things. I had no idea how cool it is to be so loved by my granddaughter!

My Reason for Being Here

God has placed on my heart a love for God, a love for my neighbor, and a love for serving others. We have a great opportunity to make a difference in the lives of others, to make the world right around us a little better with God’s help and leading.

My Biggest Struggle

Details and patience. I am a “big picture” guy and know that the Holy Spirit has great things to accomplish here at First Church. I want to act, and act now, and sometimes I need to take a step back and listen to the Holy Spirit’s still, quiet voice. I am surrounded by faithful people, and together, God is using everyone and each one’s distinct gifts to further the Kingdom on Earth. I need to remember, “Focus and chill, Pastor Tom, God’s got this!”
